Unlike the run-of-mill diagnostic laboratories in the country today, Acu-MDx aspires to establish itself as a Public Health Laboratory to serve an important and evolving role in supporting the broad mission of public health in the country. To fulfill this role, Acu-MDx has integrated with a diverse set of public health programs and services at the local, state, and national levels within its clinical laboratory domain of providing a substantial proportion of the data used by health-care providers to diagnose, monitor, and treat patients. As a PHL, the data generated may be used by policy makers to assess the community's health status, identify health risks, and support public health program activities and decisions. The scope of responsibilities of PHLs will grow in the future, not only in terms of the quantity of data generated, but also in the complexity of testing.
